An orthodontic patient can properly eat almost any food and, with
reasonable care, can avoid damage to his or her appliances. However,
these three types of food may cause trouble.
|
Hard
Foods may cause damage by bending the wires,
loosening the cement under the bands, or breaking the brackets and
attachments on the bands. Some of the foods of this type are listed
below along with the ways they may be eaten.
| Carrots or celery |
Grated, cooked or cut into thin pieces |
| Apples |
Peeled and cut into wedges |
| French Bread / Hard Rolls |
Small pieces. Beware of hard crusts! |
| Corn on the Cob |
Kernals must be cut off the cobb |
| Chewing ice cubes/ bones |
Please don't! |
| Chewing on pencils |

| Popcorn |

Husks that may get trapped between teeth and gums can
cause swelling and infection. |
Sticky
foods damage appliances by bending
wires and loosening cement |
| Taffy, Sugar Daddies, peanut brittle,
carmels, etc. |
Please don't! |
| Gum |
Sugarless only, and best avoided with retainers
|
| Bubble Gum |
Please don't! |
FOODS HIGH IN SUGAR CONTENT
should be avoided between meals. Brush your teeth thoroughly immediately
after sweets. In spite of your care, you may occasionally do some
damage to your appliances. If a band comes loose from a tooth, please
call the office at once. A tight band actually protects a tooth
from decay, but decay is rapid under a loose band. If an appliance
is irritating or hurting you, please call the office so that we
can help you or have you come in for a special appointment.
